1. What are three key safety features of a sea kayak?

  • Floatation, it should either have sealed compartments or installed air bags or other floatation material to ensure that it will still float when completely full of water.
  • It should be fitted out with grab handles and deck lines so you can keep hold of it.
  • It should be well maintained.

2. What safety equipment should you always have on ANY sea kayaking session?

  • Sea worthy Kayak
  • PFD, preferably designed for sea kayaking
  • Whistle
  • Mobile Phone and VHF Radio (two independent means of calling for help)
  • Bilge Pump/bailer

3. What are the most important things about the safety equipment you carry?

  • You should be familiar with how to use it.
  • You should be able to get to it easily.
  • It should be in good condition.

4. What are the most important things to do when you capsize?

  • Don’t Panic!
  • Keep hold of your kayak and paddle.
  • Alert the rest of your group.
